Astrophytum myriostigma
Astrophytum myriostigma
Native to the highlands of central and northern Mexico, Astrophytum myriostigma grows on stony east and west facing slopes.
The name Astrophytum comes from the Greek for “star plant”. While myriostigma means “many dotted” making this species the many dotted star plant.
A spineless cactus, Astrophytum myriostigma is covered with many minute white hair-like scales that give it a white or silvery/grey appearance. These scales are composed of very fine interwoven hairs.
As the plant ages, it grows from it’s youthful ball shape into a more columnar shape.
Prefers to grow somewhat drier than many cacti as it’s thin fibrous root system can be easily rotted by excessive watering. Even high levels of atmospheric humidity can lead to irreversible damage to the plant. Although it is easy to grow, it’s temperament towards water makes this species one to avoid for novice growers.
